APPLICATION FOR A NEW MASSACHUSETTS FORESTER LICENSE

 

 

I, ________________________________________, hereby apply to the Director of the Division of State Parks and Recreation for a Massachusetts Forester License.  I certify that I am familiar with and will comply with Massachusetts laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to forestry.

 

I am enclosing the following, as required under the attached 304 CMR 10.04 and DCR Forester Licensing Policies

 

q       A certificate documenting that I am a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester®, along with a listing and evidence of my work experience for a minimum of seven out of the last 12 years. (applicant must have practiced forestry or have been enrolled in an approved educational program for seven out of the last 12 years)

 

Or

 

q       A record of colleges/universities attended and certified transcript(s), and a listing and evidence of my work experience for a minimum of seven out of the last 12 years. (applicant must have practiced forestry or have been enrolled in an approved educational program for seven out of the last 12 years)

 

In addition it is required that you submit examples of your Experience of a Professional Nature (EPN)

 

The Forester Licensing Board has determined that examples of EPN can take the form of:

·        Approved Forest Management Plans          

·        Approved Cutting Plans that represent long-term management

·        Approved Forest Stewardship Plans                        

·        Published reports / papers on Forestry Subjects

·        Letter(s) from employers or other licensed foresters attesting to EPN

REQUIREMENTS FOR RECEIVING A MASSACHUSETTS FORESTER LICENSE

Taken from 304 CMR 10.04

 

The minimum education and experience requirements for a Licensed Forester shall be:

(a)   Successful completion of a Bachelors of Science (BS) degree from a SAF-accredited professional forestry degree program, or a program approved by the Director, and which included courses in each of the following areas:

1.   Forest Biology/Ecology;

2.   Forest Resource Measurements;

3.   Forest Resource Management including, but not limited to, silviculture and timber harvesting;

4.   Forest Resource Policy and Administration;

 

plus three years of forestry work experience of a character that prepared the applicant to practice forestry competently.  At least two of the three years of work experience must be experience of a professional nature, and up to one year may be work experience of a technical nature; or,

 

(b)   Successful completion of a  Masters degree (MS or MF) in forestry or related post-baccalaureate degree, which includes at least 30 credit hours, and courses in each of the following areas:

1.   Forest Biology/Ecology;

2.   Forest Resource Measurements;

3.   Forest Resource Management, including, but not limited to, silviculture and timber harvesting;

4.   Forest Resource Policy and Administration;

 

plus three years of forestry work experience of a character that prepared the applicant to practice forestry competently.  At least two of the three years of work experience must be experience of a professional nature, and up to one year may be work experience of a technical nature. 

Within the Master’s degree option, up to two years of undergraduate work required to enter a Master’s program shall count toward fulfillment of the above stated requirement that seven of the last 12 years were spent in preparation for practicing forestry; or,

 

(c)    Successful completion of an Associates degree in a SAF-recognized technical forestry education program, or a technical forestry education program approved by the Director, plus five years of forestry work experience of a character that has prepared the applicant to practice forestry competently.  At least four of the five years of work experience must be experience of a professional nature, and up to one year may be work experience of a technical nature.

 

Any additional forestry or natural resource management education at an accredited institution beyond the minimum requirements described in 304 CMR 10.04(2) (a), (b), and (c) may count for no more than one year of work experience.
